What is Spinal Stenosis?
Spinal stenosis is a condition when the spinal canal narrows. Spinal stenosis generally happens in the lumbar back and sometimes in the neck region. The spinal canal is the small holes and space along the vertebrae where the nerve roots go in and out along with the spinal cord. As the bones become more narrow, it causes lower back pain or cervical pain that can be treated with medicines or physical therapy.
Narrow spinal canals can be caused by genetics or birth deformities, however most spinal stenosis is a result of old age. Spinal stenosis can be caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spine trauma and spinal injuries, spinal tumors, Paget's disease of the bones, and failed spinal surgery or prior spine surgery.
At our Wexford Chiropractor office, we begin with a thorough consultation and the most conservative treatments to start to alleviate your back pain and to increase your physical mobility. Most of our patients find that they are relieved of pain within a month or two or treatment. If the treatment we offer at first is not effective, we proceed to our FDA approved VAX-D decompression therapy which is also known as spinal decompression. It is not a traction device but rather a computerized decompression table that has been medically approved by the FDA.
Spinal Stenosis is diagnosed from a variety of symptoms that are confirmed with a historical and physical exam that may include X-Rays. The pain that brought you to us at our Wexford Chiropractic office will be our main focus. As treatment progresses we will reevaluate to make sure your strength, movement and reflexes are progressing.
Symptoms of spinal stenosis include:
Spinal stenosis is confirmed by our medical staff. The chiropractic doctor will examine your x-rays and check for abnormalities caused by bone spurs, osteosrthritis or any naroowing of the spinal canal.
The treatment for spinal stenosis in our clinic is founded on the non-surgical approach. We typically treat spinal stenosis by advising physical therapy, pain medications(NSAIDS), and massage. We then suggest electrical stimulation or VAX-D treatment.
Physical Therapy is provided in our wellness clinic and is used to build strength and endurance along with flexibility in the muscles surrounding the spine. Physical therapy also helps to improve balance and improve and control pain symptoms.
Spinal surgery is an option and is dependent on your condition. Our chiropractor can refer you to a neurosurgeon that specializes in traditional or laser spine surgery. This is an absolute last resort as our office and spinal stenosis treatments are highly effective.
