Wexford Chiropractor - Education
The difference between osteopath and chiropractor is explained on this page to help you increase your knowledge of the two professions.
Both osteopath and chiropractor professions require a doctorate degree that is supported by several years of education and training.
Doctor of Osteopathic medicine is a practice that is based on the science of healing. First discovered By Andrew Taylor Still in 1874, osteopathic medicine and practice relies on the fact that the human body has the capability to heal within itself.
A Traditional osteopathic doctor focuses on more natural healing methods to restore health to a patient. This is very similar to what a chiropractic doctor does as well.
The osteopathic profession includes study in all areas of medicine and surgery and differs in chiropractic medicine in that it covers a broader scope of practice. Many doctors of osteopathic medicine work alongside doctors of medicine in primary care practice clinics and hospitals.
In terms of the difference between osteopath and chiropractor medicine is within the level and scope of their practice. A chiropractor works on diagnoses of misaligned and displaced vertebrae of the spine and utilize manual means to manipulate and adjust the spine. Chiropractors focus on manual manipulations for spine and joint structures and do not use drugs or surgery. An osteopathic doctor will utilize natural means, much like a chiropractor, but can also prescribed medication and perform surgeries.
Chiropractic care focuses on aligning the spine which in turn affects the relationship of the nerves and the pain associated with them. Compression on the nerves due to spinal compression can be reversed or alleviated using chiropractic decompression techniques. Chiropractor are concerned with influencing the physiologic function of the body system through their manual manipulation and adjustments of the affected body parts.
Osteopathic physicians utilize manipulation as well and are trained to find a treatment plan that enhances the body’s natural ability to heal. Osteopathic goes farther than spinal alignment in that it deals with the physiology and several direct and indirect techniques to promote healing which may include medications and homeopathic approaches.
Both Osteopaths and Chiropractors practice using a variety of techniques that may include myofascial release, visceral manipulation and more.
Both chiropractic and osteopathic care involved approaching patients on a case by case basis and do not generally prescribe a set amount of years or month of any particular treatment plan and relies on the improved healing of the patient to direct their prescriptions.
