Chiropractic is a profession in the health care field that focuses on the neuromuscular and musculoskeletal system, along with the effects of the disorders that are associated with them and the patient's general wellness. Chiropractic care is commonly used as a therapy or technique to care for neuromusculoskeletal pain and complaints which often include back pain, joint pain in the arms and legs, headaches, neck pain, and leg pain.
Chiropractic Doctors are called chiropractors or back doctors. They can also be called chiropractic physicians or chiropractic specialists. In general, most chiropractic doctors practice a hands on approach to their therapy and rehabilitation and often offer drug-free and natural healing remedies. A chiropractic visit often will include a patient examination, diagnosis of the condition and a treatment plan. Because the neuromusculoskeletal systems are so broad, you will find that a chiropractic doctor also has a broad range of skills and is trained in may therapeutic exercises along with rehabilitation therapies for sports injuries and the general public. Chiropractic Doctors also are well trained in nutritional and dietary counseling due to the fact that the skeletal and muscular systems heavily rely on a healthy weight and nutritional balances.
Spinal manipulation is the most common type of techniques used by a chiropractic doctor and is also referred to as a chiropractic adjustment. Not all chiropractic patients will be prescribed a chiropractic adjustment. The therapy is reserved only for those patients that need and would benefit from it. The chiropractic adjustment involved manipulating joints to restore their mobility. This is achieved by the controlled manual thrusts or force that the chiropractic doctor places on the joints that have become less mobile.
Joints lose their mobility when put under stress and have undergone tissue damage. Tissue damage may occur from a direct traumatic event, repetitive stress to the affected area or sitting awkwardly for long periods of time. Injured tissues will change physically and chemically to the point that there is pain and inflammation that results in a lower functioning area within the body tissue. The chiropractic doctor will manipulate and adjust the affected tissues in an attempt to restore the mobility, relieve the pain, reduce the muscle spasms or contractions and give the tissue a chance to restore and heal.
A chiropractic adjustment may cause the patient to experience very mild soreness following treatment much like that of certain forms of exercise. This will resolve within 48 hours and is a rare side effect. Chiropractic care is the primary recommended care for many cases, such as lower back pain and cervical pain.
Chiropractic care can, often times, compliment and support other types of medical treatments and work collaboratively to help a patient recover and repair from an injury or musculoskeletal condition.
