What are some causes of lower back pain that we treat?
The lower back tend to take on the load of stress and strain from the body and therefore often suffers from more problematic back pain than the rest of the back.
The lower back is in charge of supporting the upper body, the spine and consists of over 25 small bones that consist of vertebrae that are piled on top of one another. In between each piece of bone is a piece of cartilage that is called the disc. Each disc takes charge in absorbing everyday shock that the body is exposed to and prevents bone to bone grinding which can be caused by herniated discs or degenerative disc disease.
As a person ages, the disc will deteriorate due to wear or degenerative disc disease and may become torn or injured. The weak disc can then bubble out (almost like a worn tire tube) and be at risk for popping.
A spinal disc that is bubbled out is known as a herniated or slipped disc. If the disc is very bad it may be called a ruptured disc in which case the bulge has become more severe and the material inside the painful spine disc may press on the spinal nerves causing unbearable and debilitating pain in the body.
Lower back pain may be dull or extremely excruciating depending on the pressure on the injured spinal area, movement or how the disc is interacting with the spinal nerve.
Herniated discs that cause lower back pain can commonly be associated with pain that runs down the leg and is known as sciatica.
